Chief’s Welcome Welcome to the University of New Orleans Campus. The University of New Orleans Police Department’s #1 goal is the safety of all students, faculty, staff and visitors to our campus. The dedicated professionals of the UNO Police Department work hard to achieve that goal and to make this University the safest in the country. All University of New Orleans Police Officers have completed the State of Louisiana Police Officers Standards and Training and are commissioned by the State of Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Criminal Justice. In addition to enforcing and providing services to the University of New Orleans Community, the UNO Police Department has been commissioned by the Superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department to provide a safe environment for the surrounding community. The University of New Orleans Police Department patrols the neighborhoods around the University to make the area a safer place for the University of New Orleans community. The University Police Department responds to requests for services by students, faculty and staff in the area along Elysian Fields Avenue from Interstate 10 to Lakeshore Drive. Members of this department are highly trained and experienced officers who continue to receive additional training in areas such as SWAT (special weapons and tactics), verbal judo, weapons qualifications, crime prevention and other areas in order to have the ability to handle and control any event that may arise. We want you to feel secure and safe when on our campus and a well trained and prepared Police Department helps to achieve that goal. Besides enforcing all local, state and federal laws and providing for your safety, we also provide other services to the UNO community. We will assist you when you become locked out of your vehicle, provide escorts from class late at night and provide instructional classes on safety such as our RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) classes. In short, we stand ready to assist you in any way possible to assure your safety and to help you achieve your goal of a college education, so please do not hesitate to call on us at anytime. You will find some additional information on this page concerning safety, crime prevention tips, and steps you may employ to reduce the possibility of criminal activity. We encourage you to take a few minutes to review this information. Once again, all the members of the University of New Orleans Police Department extend a heart felt welcome to you. Thomas R. Harrington
