Police Advice Taking Precautions to Avoid Auto Thefts on Campus

Three vehicles have been stolen from the University of New Orleans Campus area since October 16, 2008. There was no glass on the ground where the vehicles were parked which leads police to believe that the cars were left unlocked or had their locks defeated. There were no witnesses.

·         The first vehicle was stolen between 6 p.m. on October 15 and noon on October 16 from the Pontchartrain Hall North parking lot on the west side of building.

·         The second car was stolen on October 20 between 9:15 a.m. and noon from the Kirschman Hall parking lot.

·         The third car was taken on November 11 between 7:45 a.m. and 11:20 a.m. from the South Main lot.

University Police recommend the following taking the following steps to avoid car thefts:

1.    Always secure your vehicle properly. Roll up windows and lock all doors. If you have a car alarm, make sure it is functioning and set it before leaving your vehicle.

2.    Always remove everything of value from the interior of your vehicle. Secure property in the trunk of your vehicle or under your seats and out of sight of anyone passing near your car.

3.    If you have a steering wheel lock, install it each time you leave your vehicle. These devices are difficult and time consuming for thieves to defeat and cost under $50.

4.    Try to park in a well-lighted area.

5.    Keep a copy of your vehicle information with you or somewhere you can get to it quickly. This will help police should your vehicle be stolen.

6.    After parking, make a note of the exact location of your parking space in case your vehicle is stolen. This will prevent lost time looking for your vehicle.

The University of New Orleans Police Department is dedicated to the protection of both you and your property. By following these tips, you can help the police in this endeavor.
